Title:Estimated Level of Use - Darwin Rural Groundwater Resources
Citation Date:2017-08-30
Date Type:creation
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
Description
This spatial dataset describes the estimated use of groundwater resources within the Darwin Rural Water Control District and the Palmerston Municipality. This information will be updated on a weekly basis. Users should refer to the date that the estimated level of use was generated.
A desktop assessment describes an estimated level of use for each groundwater resource zone. This supports investigations for a better understanding of the use of groundwater, in particular, the groundwater resource zones that do not have a current management plan. The data is intended to clarify the department's position in relation to water availability in 112 groundwater resource zones in the Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston Municipal area. It does not include consideration of surface water resources in these areas.

Data Quality
Lineage:Refer to dataset Groundwater Resource Zones Darwin Rural Area and Palmerston - metadata: www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/metadata/export_data?type=html&metadata_id=61E80FB43D523BE6E050CD9B21445ED2
30 August 2017. Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston: A total of 138 groundwater resource zones were created and grouped into 11 groundwater systems. The data compilation process is described in the report, Woltmann 2017, Chapter 7, Assessment methodology. The estimated use was not displayed in the original dataset.
1 December 2020. Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston: The number of groundwater resource zones were reduced to 112 to consolidate smaller zones within the same groundwater system. The grouping into 11 groundwater systems remain. The process to establish the estimated level of use for each zone was reassessed. The methodology is described in the report, Miles 2020, Appendix A. Refer to supplementary details in this metadata record.
Positional Accuracy:The spatial datasets used to create the groundwater resource zones are varied in scale, ranging from 1:100 000 to 1:250 000.
Attribute Accuracy:Each polygon has been assigned a range of attributes described in the Data Dictionary in this metadata record. The estimated water use categories for each groundwater resource zone are described as;
- Over-used (>100% use)
- High (90-100% use)
- Medium (50-90% use)
- Low (<50% use)
- Excluded
The dataset displayed in NR Maps only shows the final Estimated Use category level and the date that it was generated.
The Estimated Use calculations are updated on a weekly basis. Users should refer to the Estimated Use date.
The calculations used to create the Estimated Use categories are displayed for Northern Territory Government use only.
Refer to the report Status of groundwater resources in the Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston municipality (Miles M. 2020) to review estimated calculations for each groundwater zone as at 1 December 2020. The methodology used to generate the calculation is described in Appendix 1.
The values described within each groundwater resource zone include the parcel count (less than or greater than 5000m2), Stock and Domestic Use (ML), Recharge (ML), Consumptive Pool (ML), licenced bores count, Licenced Volume (ML) and Total Use %.
Logical Consistency:The spatial data polygons in this dataset are multi-part.
01/12/2020 - There are 112 groundwater resources zones that were created from 131 single part polygons within the Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston Municipality.
Completeness:The Estimated Use dataset is updated on a weekly basis. Users should refer to the Estimated Use date.

Attribute Attribute Description Possible Code Code Description 01. EST_USE Alias: Estimated Use
The level of use within each groundwater resource zone has been categorised according to the level of use for licensed and unlicensed use. The level of use determines to capacity for future groundwater dependent development within each zone.
A desktop exercise was undertaken to assign an estimated level of use for each groundwater resource zone. The use is updated on a weekly basis.
Users should refer to the date that the estimated use was generated.
If this data is displayed on a static map product, the USE DATE should be displayed / referenced.1. Over-used (>100% use) Any development that results in an increase in the number of land titles and therefore and increase in the number of statutory rights to access groundwater will not be supported by this Department. 2. High (90-100% use) Level of groundwater use is approaching full allocation. Contact the department for further information before submitting an application 3. Medium (50-90% use) The Department is currently accepting applications for this resource. Contact Water Resources for further information. 4. Low (<50% use) The Department is currently accepting applications for this resource. Contact Water Resources for further information. 5. Excluded Estimated water use for this category has been assessed using a different methodology. Please contact the Department for further information. 02. EST_DATE Date that the Groundwater Zone Estimated Use was generated.
This dataset will be updated on a weekly basis.
If this data is displayed on a static map product, the USE DATE should be displayed / referenced.03. GWRZ_NO Alias: Zone no
Groundwater Resource Zone number. This dataset is multi-part. There are a total of 112 groundwater resource zones in the Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston Municipality including 2 managed resources Berry Springs and Howard Allocation Planning areas.04. GWRESOURCE Alias: Groundwater Resource
A groundwater resource zone is a defined area within an aquifer or groundwater system.
The Groundwater Resource name is a concatenation of System, Sub-Catchment, Sub group, Water Allocation Plan and Water Management Zone.05. GW_SYSTEM Alias: Groundwater System
A system that is hydrologically connected and described at the level desired for management purposes (eg. Sub-catchment, catchment, basin or drainage division, or groundwater management unit, sub-aquifer, aquifer, groundwater basin)06. SUBCATCH Alias: Sub-catchment 07. SUBGROUP Groundwater Resource sub group 08. WAP Alias: Water Allocation Plan
Statutory plan declared under the NT Water Act for surface water and/or groundwater systems developed in consultation with relevant stakeholders on the basis of available scientific and socioeconomic assessment to provide resource security for users and secure ecological outcomes.09. WMZ Alias: Water Management Zone
The Water Management Zone is located within a Water Allocation Planning Area.10. WCD Alias: Water Control District 11. AREA_M2 Alias: Zone Area (m2)
This dataset has multi-part polygons. The area describes the total for the zone.12. AREA_HA Alias: Zone Area (ha)
This dataset has multi-part polygons. The area describes the total for the zone.
