Abstract:

This study includes the first comprehensive description of sinkholes and their characteristics in the Katherine region where karst topography is a predominant component of the surface or nearsurface geology. The study area covers approximately 962km2 around the township of Katherine where 283 sinkhole locations were defined between 1999 and 2002.

The primary objective of the study was to provide basic information and data aimed at enhancing the understanding of karst topography as it relates to the potential for sinkhole collapses in the Katherine Region. This information is extremely important for planning processes and is essential to agencies responsible for planning, zoning, design, and construction in areas underlain by the Tindall Limestone.

Data Quality

Lineage:The primary location of all sinkholes in the project area was determined by use of topographic maps and aerial photographs. Topographical maps in scales 1:5 000, 1:10 000, 1:50 000 and 1: 100 000 were used. All detected sinkholes were transferred onto a 1:10 000 base map. From subsequent field reconnaissance 283 sinkholes were identified and assessed.

Positional Accuracy:Descriptions of the two-dimensional geometry of karst depression depth, width, and elongation trends in sinkholes were determined using measurement protocols described by Williams (1971). This
method is described in Figure 9 of the report. The central coordinate location is used to create point spatial data for this study. The scale of the data should not be used beyond 1:50,000.

Attribute Accuracy:Sinkhole attributes are described in the report in Appendix B - Morphometry of Karst Depressions. These attributes were joined to the site locations of the sinkholes.

Logical Consistency:Point data described using coordinate locations in the report as Datum AGD66 in the UTM projection of Zone 53. The data was converted to Datum GDA94 in geographic coordinates using GIS tools.

Supplementary Information

Limitations of use
The sinkhole locations in the Katherine area were captured from aerial photographs, ground and helicopter surveys. Locations were plotted on 1:10,000 scale topographic maps and co-ordinates taken from the maps. Not all features were located using a GPS. The location accuracy is of the order of +/- 100 metres.
When assessing specific sinkholes, a site inspection is recommended to confirm and validate mapping accuracy on the ground.
