Title: Land Capability for the Proposed Township of Weddell, Northern Territory
Citation Date:2012-01-05
Date Type:creation
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
Description
This spatial dataset provides polygon information on the land capability map units of the Weddell area, Northern Territory. This survey provides high resolution (1:10 000 scale) land capability information to support the development of the proposed Township of Weddell and surrounds specifically describing the land capability for urban development with respect to soil drainage, soil depth, slope, gravels and rock.

Data Quality
Lineage:Map unit boundaries delineated in the field using hand held Garmin GPSMap60 and Garmin GPS60 global positioning system (gps). Field data (site information) described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture. Map unit polygons collected via geographic information system (ArcGIS/MapInfo). Landform, soil and land capability attributes attached to map units.
The data was compiled in 2011, however it was only available for NTG use. In July 2020, the data was made available for public access.
Positional Accuracy:Map unit boundaries delineated in the field using hand held Garmin GPSMap60 and Garmin GPS60 global positioning system (gps) and reviewed in ARcGIS 10 against high resolution georeferenced aerial photography provided by the Northern Territory Department of Planning and Infrastructure. (Positional accuracy +/- 15m) Comparison of GPS waypoints and tracks with cadastre and georeferenced high resolution imagery in ESRI ArcMap indicates nominal positional accuracy of the gps units to be generally 3-5 metres.
The mapping scale is 1:10 000. Within the drainage areas, sub-unit boundaries were digitised on screen in ESRI ArcGIS 10 from georeferenced high resolution aerial photography. As boundaries represent lines of best fit for gradational landscape properties the positional accuracy of boundaries varies but is considered moderate to high.
Attribute Accuracy:Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen. Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary, have been added to each polygon.
The soil and landscape attributes for each polygon include:
Drainage - classes based on National Committee on Soil and Terrain (2009)
Landform - based on National Committee on Soil and Terrain (2009)
Slope - derived from 5m cell size slope gradient map generated in ArcGIS 10 Spatial Analyst from 1:2500 contour data
Erosion risk
Soil depth - classes based on Isbell (2003)
Gravels - classes based on Isbell (2003)
Rock - classes based on National Committee on Soil and Terrain (2009)
Acid Sulfate Soils - presence / absence; if present refer to Hill and Edmeades (2008)
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.
