Abstract:

This high resolution vegetation survey (scale 1:10,000) and accompanying polygon spatial dataset provides information about the vegetation communities over the Weddell area, Northern Territory. This information is intended to support the development of the proposed Weddell townsite area and surrounds.

In 2020, vegetation communities for the Middle Arm Peninsula, west of Weddell, were appended to the original dataset. This includes new survey work as well as existing mangrove mapping. The survey extent has increased from 179 km2 to 443 km2 in area.

Data Quality

Lineage:Version 1.0 data for the proposed new township of Weddell was compiled in 2011 for NTG use. In July 2020, the data was made available for public access, including the associated technical report (Cuff and Brocklehurst, 2011).
Map unit boundaries were derived from a number of remotely sensed data sources using both statistical analysis and manual interpretation methods, including:
1. Stereoscopic interpretation of high resolution hardcopy aerial photography;
2. On-screen interpretation of contemporary high resolution digital aerial photography;
3. Manual interpretation and statistical analysis of Worldview 2 multi-spectral satellite imagery

Version 2 published 21/04/2021: Additional field survey and mapping was conducted in 2018/19 on the remaining areas of the Middle Arm Peninsula to the west of the original survey boundary. This utilised an approach and classification framework consistent with the original survey with the addition of more recent NTLIS program ortho-imagery to aid the interpretation of vegetation patterns.

Positional Accuracy:POLYGON DATA:
Polygon boundaries were manually digitised from a combination of aerial photography interpretation and satellite image analysis on a high resolution (15cm), 2010 digital aerial photograph image base (NTLIS, 2010) of the Weddell area.

Polygon boundaries were manually digitised from a combination of aerial photography interpretation and satellite image analysis on a high resolution (15cm), 2017/18 digital aerial photograph image base (NTLIS, 2017, 2018) for the Middle Arm Peninsula.

Attribute Accuracy:These polygons were attributed using the classification of vegetation communities derived from numerical analysis of >100 full-floristic vegetation survey sites collected from across the Weddell survey area.
Polygon attribution reflects the interpretation and integration of a range of data including detailed site data, field notes, aerial photography, satellite image analysis and digital elevation models. Full details of the vegetation mapping process and the vegetation map unit descriptions can be found in Cuff & Brocklehurst, 2011.

Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Completeness:- Spatial data updates completed for Weddell Area and Middle Arm Peninsula.
