Title: Bushfire Risk for Remote Communities in the Northern Territory
Citation Date:2020-07-28
Date Type:creation
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
Description
This spatial point dataset provides information describing bushfire risk to remote communities in the Northern Territory. The bushfire risk rating for each community is described as either High, Moderate or Low and is current as at 30/06/2020.
The primary purpose of the investigation was to map, describe and evaluate bushfire risk to inform Bushfires NT and Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service on the bushfire emergency preparedness of remote communities and evaluate the associated bushfire risk.
The data was compiled using desktop assessment tools and on-site validation processes will continue to inform the risk assessment scores. Service providers are encouraged to contact Bushfires NT to assist with the validation process. Bushfires NT email: Bushfires.NT@nt.gov.au

Bushfires NT (BFNT) completed a Northern Territory-wide risk audit and risk assessment in 2019/2020 funded through the National Disaster Resilience Program. The bushfire risk audit assessed remote communities against a set of criteria that contributed to bushfire risk, including;
Administration
- Is the community located inside a Fire Protection Zone?
- Does the community have a municipal service provider?
Environment
- Is the community located in a low rainfall area?
- Has the community experienced less than one fire every two years in the last 20 years?
- Is the community located outside the gamba grass declared zone?
Opportunity
- Is the community located within a Volunteer Bushfire Brigade area?
- Is the community located within an Indigenous Ranger Group's operational area?
- Is the community located within a registered, active Savanna Burning Project area?
Preparedness
- Does the community have a fire plan?
- Does the community carry out fuel reduction activities?
- Does the community have an established fire break?
Complexity
- Does the community have a school?
- Is the estimated population of the community greater than 100 people?
- Does the community have bulk fuel stores?
Not all audit criteria are stored in the final spatial dataset provided to the public.
Positional Accuracy:Aboriginal Community locations are described using a Longitude/Latitude (X/Y) coordinate location sourced from the Northern Territory Place Names Register. Website http://www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/placenames/
Attribute Accuracy:Information about fire risk for each community has been attached to a series of descriptive attributes. A total score for the attributes is used to create the risk rating.
Not all attributes have been included in the final public dataset. Refer to the Data Dictionary in this metadata record to review the attribute description.
The Risk Date will change as attribute information for each community is edited.
Logical Consistency:Each location point contains a single community record.
Completeness:Complete

Each community has been allocated a Bushfire Risk Rating as at 30 June 2020. Scores against a set of criteria were totalled to generate the risk rating.High The rating is representative of a numeric score 22 - 24 from all audit fields. Low The rating is representative of a numeric score 15 - 18 from all audit fields. Moderate The rating is representative of a numeric score 19 - 21 from all audit fields. 03. Risk Date The assessment date of the bushfire risk rating is current as at 30/06/2020. 04. Comm_ID Alias: Community Identifier
The Community identifier is sourced from the Northern Territory Place Names Register. Website www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/placenames/05. CommType Alias: Community Type
The Community type categories are sourced from the Northern Territory Place Names Register.
