Description

Abstract:

This polygon spatial dataset describes soils and landscapes in the Gunn Point Area, north of Darwin in the Northern Territory.
The primary purpose of the investigation was to map, describe and evaluate soil and landscapes to inform future development. Core landform and soil attributes attached to the land units are included with the spatial dataset. The area was mapped at a scale of 1:25,000. The acid soil component was sourced from existing information mapped at a scale of 1:50,000.
The extent of the Gunn Point Area covers approximated 70,800 ha. and is defined by the Howard Water Allocation Planning Areas north of Gunn Point Road to the coastline.

Vegetation attributes were not included in this dataset.
Refer to the dataset Vegetation Communities in the Gunn Point Area. Metadata record: www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/metadata/export_data?type=html&metadata_id=8739BD7DA89BF802E050CD9B214469EB

This information was compiled as part of the Mapping the Future Project - Gunn Point
This project has identified land capability, water availability and biodiversity values to support land planning and inform development potential over the Gunn Point area.

Data Quality

Lineage:Two existing land unit and soil surveys have been compiled to produce new consistent mapping over the Gunn Point area. Primary datasets appended to compile the new mapping include;
- Fogarty, PJ, Lynch, B and Wood, B (1984). The Land Resources of the Elizabeth, Darwin and Blackmore Rivers.
- Hill JV and Edmeades, BFJ (2008). Acid Sulfate Soils of the Darwin Region.

Positional Accuracy:Varies depending on source dataset.

Attribute Accuracy:The attribute information conforms to the Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook at time of capture.
Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen. The department has assigned a list of core attribute values, described in the Data Dictionary below, to each polygon.

The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied to an ESRI file geo-database format.

LAND EVALUATION: See Chapter 6 in report (refer to Supplementary Information in this metadata record)

- General Land Capabililty evaluates landscape characteristics that could influence the general use of the land. Descriptions for key characteristics considered important have been added to the land unit polygon, including slope, rock outcrop, soil depth, soil drainage and acid sulfate soils.

- Land suitable for irrigated agriculture. A Land Suitability Class is assigned for a range of 9 irrigated crop groups based on land evaluation limitations. Class 1 is suitable land with negligible limitations through to class 5 which is unsuitable land with extreme limitations.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Data Dictionary

AttributeAttribute DescriptionPossible CodeCode Description
01. SURVEY_NMEAlias: Survey Name
The name of the survey area or report to which the mapping refers
02. SURVEY_IDAlias: Survey Identifier
A department code that usually refers to the first five characters from the original survey site sheet.
03. LAND_UNITAlias: Land Unit
The LAND_UNIT field is the land unit label from the spatial dataset (ie 9a2).
04. LFORM_CLASSAlias: Landform Class
Landform class is a system adopted by the department. The categories do not conform to national criteria even though some have been sourced from Australian Soil and Land Survey - Field Handbook (Mc Donald et.al. 1998).
05. SOIL_SYSAlias: Soil Classification System
The soil classification system used to describe the soil in the land unit description
06. SOILAlias: Dominant Soil Order
The dominant soil order described in a land unit is recorded.
07. LFORM_DESCAlias: Landform Description
Landform description includes details about landform, and general notes pertaining to slope, surface gravel and other details describing the land unit.
08. SOIL_DESCAlias: Soil Description
Soil description includes an ASC or Northcote/other soil classification and usually includes colour, soil depth and other notes describing the soil.
09 - 18. Land EvaluationLand evaluation criteria.
Landscape characteristics were evaluated that could influence the general use of the land. Descriptions for key characteristics considered important include slope, surface rock, soil depth, soil drainage, flooding, salinity and acid sulfate soils. For detailed information about General Land Capability review the Land Evaluation chapter in the accompanying report.
19 - 22. LCAPAlias: General Land Capability Class

Land capability assessment involves an evaluation of land unit characteristics that could influence the general use of the land. The five key land characteristics considered important for land evaluation in the survey area are - Slope; Rock outcrop; Soil depth; Soil drainage and Acid sulfate soils.

Class 1 has the highest degree of capability and Class 4 has the lowest capability for a range of land uses. Class 1 is not present in this survey.
1. HighLand with minimal limitations. Highly productive requiring only low management practices (Slope 0-1%; rock outcrop nil; soil depth >1.5 m; soil drainage rapid to well; ASS not present; erosion risk low)
2. ModerateLand with only moderate limitations. Will require minor management practices (Slope 1-2%; and/or rock outcrop 0-2%; and/or soil depth 0.5-1.5 m; and/or soil drainage moderate; ASS not present; and/or erosion risk minor)
3. MarginalLand having severe limitations. Will require major management practices (Slope 2-3%; and/or rock outcrop 2-10%; and/or soil depth 0.25-0.5 m; and/or soil drainage imperfect; and/or low probability of ASS soil present; and/or erosion risk high)
4. Not SuitableLand having extreme limitations. This includes erosion risk due to steep slopes, soil depth, rocky outcrops, and poor drainage (Slope >3%; and/or rock outcrop >10%; and/or soil depth <0.25 m; and/or soil drainage poor to very poor; and/or high probability of ASS present; and/or erosion risk very high)
23 - 32. AGSC_G1 to AGSC_G10Alias: Land Suitability Class for Agricultural Group 1 (to Group 10).
Class 1 - 5 for each irrigated crop group based on land evaluation limitations. Class 1 is suitable land with negligible limitations through to class 5 which is unsuitable land with extreme limitations.
1.Suitable land with negligible limitations. This is highly productive land requiring only simple management practices to maintain sustainable production.
2.Suitable land with minor limitations which either physically reduce or constrain production; or require more than the simple management practices of Class 1 land to maintain sustainable production.
3.Suitable land with moderate limitations which either further constrain production or require more than the management practices of Class 2 land to maintain sustainable production.
4.Marginal land that is currently unsuitable due to severe limitations that preclude the sustainable economic use of the land in the manner proposed. The limitations may (or may not) be surmountable over time with changes to knowledge, economics or technology potentially leading to changes in the future suitability class for this category.
33. AREA_HAThe area of each polygon has been calculated in hectares.
