Data Quality
Lineage:Data was collated from various sources including petroleum operations records, NTGS records and databases, BMR (Bureau of Mineral Resources) publications, Geoscience Australia datasets and company information. The collated data were first published in MapInfo, ArcGIS and MS excel format in July 2010. Offshore wells, administered by NOPTA, were removed in 2012. Additional onshore wells and amendments to existing details are added routinely.
Positional Accuracy:Approximately +/- 20 metres for surveyed well locations. Location source varies from "original databases" to final well completion reports submitted by operators. Data entry and conversion from projected to geographic is manual. Datum has been assumed based on date if not given in original source.
Attribute Accuracy:Attribute source varies from "original database" to final well completion reports. The depths and elevations of some older wells have been converted from feet to meters.
Logical Consistency:The attributes and locations are manually entered and corrected if and when typing errors or more detailed information is found.
Completeness:Wells are added after the final well completion report has been submitted. Proposed and in-progress well details are not published in this dataset. Government (BMR and NTGS) stratigraphic wells are not included unless they were drilled as part of an industry government collaboration.

Attribute Attribute Description Possible Code Code Description Basic Status Indicates whether basic data is open file or not. The Petroleum Act Section 61 specifies when information provided to government can be made public (open filed). Basin The geological basin, sub-basin or province assigned to a well in the final Well Completion Report Bottom hole Lithology/Formation Bottom hole lithology (BHL) or Bottom hole formation (BHF) - the lithology type or formation penetrated at total measured depth. Released when basic data is open filed. Class Post-drilling classification of well based on Lahee Well classification system. (Development, Extension, Miscellaneous, New field discovery, New pool discovery, New field wildcat, New pool wildcat, Service, Stratigraphic) Contractor The drilling contractor responsible for drilling the well Drill Rig Name of drilling rig Drilling Datum Abbreviation indicating the datum used as the baseline to measure drilling depths. DF Drill floor GL Ground level KB Kelly bushing RT Rotary Table UNK Unknown ENO Unique Entity Number (ENO) used to identify the well in Geoscience Australia databases Elevation Measurement in metres between the Drilling Datum and Elevation datum Elevation Datum Abbreviation indicating elevation datum (Height datum). AHD Australian Height Datum LAT Lowest astronomical tide MSL Mean Sea Level UNK Unknown GL_WD The elevation, in metres, of the ground level or the sea floor (water depth) with respect to Mean Sea Level. Only coastal offshore wells will have a sea floor elevation, and this will always be negative (- water depth) Hydrocarbon Shows Indicates whether the well had shows of hydrocarbons, and if so, the type and whether they were major or minor shows. Released when basic data is open filed. Interp Status Indicates whether interpreted data is open file or not. The Petroleum Act Section 61 specifies when information provided to government can be made public (open filed). The operator is usually the company responsible for exploration/activities within the title area Purpose Indicates the major purpose for the well as it was initially designed. Released when basic data is open filed. Total Measured Depth Total depth in metres as measured by the drill string with respect to the drilling datum. Released when basic data is open filed. Vertical Depth A theoretical maximum vertical depth in metres from the drilling datum. Released when basic data is open filed.
