Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The orthorectified source-scene data accuracy was validated to be within NASA's contract-specified 50 meters RMSE by the NASA Scientific Data Purchase Program's data Verification and Validation process. The source-scene data were further validated in a secondary independent process by Lockheed Martin Space Operations documented in the validation process report, "Geospatial Accuracy Validation of Orthorectified Landsat ETM+ Imagery" published 20040315. The secondary validation process reported the following accuracy characteristics: 51.92 meters max RMSE (net), 22.98 meters min RMSE (net), 34.88 meters avg RMSE (net).
Quantitative_Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 50 meters RMSE (net) nominal
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
The TruEarth(R) 15-meter Global Natural-color Mosaic was built using source-scene data and a number of successive processing steps. The intrinsic accuracy of the source scenes plus that of the subsequent processing steps affect the overall accuracy of the end product. The subsequent processing steps comprise: 1) UTM-to-geographic (equi-rectanglar) projection; 2) TruEarth(R) natural-color processing; 3) inter-scene spatial-dependent alpha blending across mosaic seam lines; 4) local and global contrast and brightness balancing and 5) GeoTIFF image formatting. Of the five processing steps, process #1 is the only process capable of impacting the horizontal positional accuracy. Process #1 involves the geometric coordinate transformation of source-scene input pixels to resulting output pixel spatial locations. The coordinate transformation process was implemented using components of the USGS General Cartographic Transformation Package (GCTP) used by the USGS's National Mapping Division. The GCTP uses double-precision floating point arithmetic computations for the input-to-output pixel space transformation calculation.
