Title:CSIRO - Lands of the Alligator Rivers Area, NT
Citation Date:2000-01-14
Date Type:publication
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
Description
Is a reconnaissance level land resource survey (scale 1:250,000) conducted by CSIRO in 1972-73 to map and describe the Alligator Rivers Area and provide information for a balanced assessment of the implications of coincident proposals for uranium mining and a national park.
The mapped information covers an area of 35,750km2 and the distribution, landforms, soils and vegetation over this area as land systems.
Land System information is usually interpreted to indicate land capability for a range of land uses and provides a basis for identifying the extent and distrbution of land resources.
(Land System - An area or group of areas throughout which there is a re-recuring pattern of topography, soils and vegetation. Recognised as being an assemblage of Land Units)

Data Quality
Lineage:Coverage linework captured from a tracing of product paper copy map then scanned as ArcInfo vector and rubber sheeted to NT cadastre and GeoImage MSS satellite mosaic of the Northern Territory.
Original linework derived using aerial photography to delineate land system boundaries and site selection, then extensively ground truthed with travas routes and speedomoter mileages coordinated field survey and descriptive note collection. Resultant air photo linework interpreted to produce final product map. Recompiled and updated to GDA94 as part of ongoing GIS Progarm 2004.
Source data
Aerial photography - 1:81,000 RC9-B&W
Base map - Australian Topographic Survey Series 1:250,000 AGD66
- Australian Geological Survey Series 1:250,000 AGD66
- Northern Territory Cadastre AGD66
- GeoImage MSS satellite mosaic of the NT AGD66
GIS - ArcInfo vector as GDA94
Positional Accuracy:Fair - Original cover was poor with registration up to +/-2km out in places. The cover was rubber sheeted to obvious points on the Geoimage MSS satellite mosaic of the Northern Territory and NT cadastre. The summation of errors from all sources results in data with a standard deviation defined by scale used as +/-500m for well-defined points.
Attribute Accuracy:High - The accuracy of the attribute information is considered high and conforms to the original CSIRO mapunits.
Logical Consistency:Good - Dataset topological consistency has been system checked and all classified polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines and there is only one label within each polygon. Polygons have been classified for Land Unit ID in the lookup table.
Completeness:Judged complete at this stage - spatial and attribute verification of the dataset has been performed. Digital cover is available for export and final product map has been produced.
