Access Constraint:Information from Records is available for inspection by anyone with a bone fide interest in specific areas of land or sea in the Northern Territory via the Request for Information from Records Application Form ( http://www.aapant.org.au/images/aapaDocs/forms/RequestforInformationfromRecordsForm/request_for_information_from_records.pdf ). Due to the secrecy provisions of the NTASSA, spatial information of this dataset is not available.

Data Quality

Lineage:Data is gathered through consultation with relevant Aboriginal site custodians. Registered sites are visited before registration to determine their location and extent and their significance. Site locations are determined using existing topographical maps with GPS or with cadastral information. Data about Registered sites is reviewed by the Authority Board before being placed on the public Register. Land owners are contacted and invited to make submissions. These are also recorded on the public Register of Sacred Sites.

Data on recorded sites is to a lesser standard of accuracy and completion.

Positional Accuracy:Positional accuracy in non-urban areas will vary depending on the method used to capture the data. In urban areas sites are located with respect to cadastres.

Each record specifies the method of capture enabling positional accuracy to be determined for each individual site.

Attribute Accuracy:Most data is gathered by qualified anthropologists working with senior Aboriginal custodians of particular sites. The number of interviews for and inspections of each site varies. At least one visit and at least one comprehensive interview with senior custodians is necessary for Registration.

Information about recorded (unregistered) sites is less accurate and comprehensive. In most cases the positional accuracy in non-urban areas would be better than one kilometre.

Logical Consistency:Site records are maintained in an Oracle database. Each site has a unique identifier and duplicates are periodically purged.

Completeness:New sites are added to the data set periodically, and sites are Registered quarterly. This dataset is continual and dynamic and will never be complete.
