Description
This is a reconnaissance level survey (1:1,000,000 scale dataset) broadly describing a representation of the present vegetation of the Northern Territory. Mapped information was compiled using Landsat Imagery and extensive ground truthing. Resultant community descriptions are contained in the report. The digital cover is whole, while printed hardcopy editions of the mapping are in Northern and Southern sections.
The line-work (circa 2000) from this vegetation survey and the attributes from the relevant publications have been translated into the NVIS vegetation attribute framework Version 5.0 (NLWRA 2000). A copy of these data is maintained in Canberra by the Bureau of Rural Sciences on behalf of the National Land and Water Resources Audit.'Both 'PRE 1750' and 'EXTANT' coverages exist. Polygon boundaries for 'PRE 1750' coverage have been altered from original coverage line-work. Polygon boundaries for 'EXTANT' coverage have been altered from the original cover by means of updating with a 'clearing' coverage. Areas within the 'cleared' region are labelled as 'cleared'.

Data Quality
Lineage:Linework originally compiled from Landsat MSS Imagery and Carnahan's compilation sheets for his 1:5,000,000 scale natural vegetation map of Australia. Mapping cover compiled from above as well as other relevent surveys and vegetation mapping at the time of commencement then extensivly ground-truthed with extended field work and point data collection. Positional Accuracy:Fair - As early dataset may have a poor positional accuracy resulting from original mapping format. This is still to be validated. Registration/location information has been derived from topographic base map, NT cadastre and GPS based field survey. The summation of errors from all sources results in data with a standard deviation defined by scale used as +/-2000m for well-defined points.
Attribute Accuracy:High - The accuracy of the attribute information is considered high and is estimated to be above 80% correct for community definition. Conforms to the 'Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook' at time of capture.
Logical Consistency:Good - Dataset topological consistency has been system checked and all classified polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines and there is only one label within each polygon. Polygons have been classified for Community ID in the lookup table.
Completeness:Judged complete at this stage - spatial and attribute verification of the dataset has been performed. Digital cover is available for export.
