Title:Bathymetry Grid and Contours for the Australian Region - 15 Second

Description

Abstract:

This dataset is a subset of AGSO's 15 second Bathymetry for the whole of Australia, which has been clipped to cover the region under the jurisdiction of the Northern Territory, and immediate surrounds.

The database contains 15 arc second gridded bathymetry data for the Australian continental shelf and adjacent region. The model was developed using the 30 arc second bathymetry model as a starting point and incorporates much new data. The data can be used to create regional and Australia-wide images of continental margin morphology of a high standard, and is suitable for use in diverse applications such as resource assessment, oceanographic modelling and fisheries studies. An Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) record will soon be available which describes how the 30 arc second gridded bathymetry data were constructed and discusses limitations and improvements to the approach.

Bathymetry contours were derived from the 15 arc second bathymetry grid and are stored as an Arc/Info line coverage.

This dataset was provided to the Northern Territory for use soley within the NT Node of the Australian Coastal Atlas.

Data Quality

Lineage:Bathymetry data collected from government, industry and foreign organisations were compiled and interpolated by C.Buchanan (AGSO).

The methodology to create the grid is summarised as a six step process:

1. Re-gridded the 30 arc second data to 15 arc second resolution. The previously interpolated 30 second data had undergone substantial editing and quality control checking. In areas where the gradient was low the loss of resolution has been negligible.

2. Integrated and compiled high confidence, high resolution data, including multibeam data, to 15 arc second resolution (25-35% of total coverage).

3. Incorporated newly compiled data, including the Tasmania Region Digital Terrain Model.

4. Limited spatial interpolation of high resolution data to a 15 arc second grid.

5. Merged the high resolution 15 arc second grid with that interpolated from the 30 arc second grid.

6. Generated and checked the 15 arc second grid.

Contours were derived using this 15 arc second grid by creating the contours in ArcView Spatial Analyst. Contours were created for the following depths:
0,5,10,15,20,30,40,50,75,100,150,200,300,400,500,600,800,1000,1500,2000,2500,3000,4000,5000,6000,7000,8000.

Positional Accuracy:15 seconds of arc. In the grid this approximates 400 metre cell size resolution. As the grid is geographically referenced, the cell size (East to West) varies from approximately 400 metres at 9 degrees South to approximately 340 metres at 45 degrees South.

Attribute Accuracy:Variable but extensively quality controlled. Attribute name is Contour, with values in metres below sea level.

Logical Consistency:Contour lines are not continuous due to the quality of the source data, particularly in the deep water areas where there is only 75% data.

Completeness:Continental shelf complete. Deep water areas 75% complete.
