Description

Abstract:

Is the vegetation survey component of a joint cooperative project to map the cultral and ecological significance of the Popham Creek area, Cobourg Peninsula. Survey is a high resolution (1:5,000 scale dataset) describing/mapping mangrove communities for Popham Creek and its environs. Mapped information describes mangrove communities/vegetation units and their attributes as floristic and environmental data and provides a basis for identifying the extent and distribution of mangrove community/vegetation resources for the Popham Creek area. (Vegetation Unit - A reasonably homogeneous part of the land surface, distinct from surrounding terrain with constant properties in landform and vegetation)

Data Quality

Lineage:Vegetation patterns delineated 1:5,000 colour aerial photography. Georeferenced using GPS ground control point.Original linework derived sterographicaly from colour aerial photography and captured into GIS system as vector information, resultant compilation then built as polygon coverage using ArcInfo giving preliminary map used to delinate community boundaries and site selection. Resultant linework extensively georeferenced/ground truthed with topographic basemap/GPS coordinated field survey/site data collection. Recompiled and updated to GDA94 as part of ongoing GIS Progarm 2004.

Vegetation Resource Information
Vegetation resource information has been derived from aerial photograph interpretation and field data describing vegetation community type, composition and distribution according to Australian Soil and Land Survey Standards at time of capture. This survey dataset has been prepared at a scale of 1:5,000. Enlarging the data beyond this scale will not provide further detail. Field verification should always accompany any mapping over specific areas.

Source data
Aerial photography - 1:20,000 Col 17.06.82 Cobourg Peninsula
Base map - Australian Topographic Survey Series 1:100,000 AGD66
- Lands/Survey Branch NT 1:25,000 film/base from 1:100,000 ATSS
- Northern Territory Cadastre AGD66
GIS - ArcInfo vector as AGD66/GDA94

Positional Accuracy:Good - Derived from topographic basemap, NT cadastre and GPS. The summation of errors from all sources results in data with a standard deviation defined by scale used as +/-20m for well-defined points.

Attribute Accuracy:High - The accuracy of the attribute information is considered high and conforms to the 'Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook' at time of capture. Analysis of site data to provide community information.

Logical Consistency:Good - Dataset topological consistency has been system checked and all classified polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines and there is only one label within each polygon. Polygons have been classified for community ID in the lookup table.

Completeness:Judged complete at this stage - spatial and attribute verification of the dataset has been performed. Digital cover is available for export.
