Description

Abstract:

This spatial dataset provides delineates land unit boundaries at a scale of 1: 50,000 within the Groote Archipelago in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and describes dominant landform, soils and vegetation. The study area covers a total of 5763 km2, a land area of 2376 km2, and excludes Bickerton Island.
The primary purpose of the investigation was to map, describe and evaluate land resources to guide future strategic land use planning for agricultural development and land management.
Core landform, soil, vegetation, and land capability attributes attached to the land units are included with the spatial dataset

Data Quality

Lineage:Map unit boundaries delineated from interpretation of:
Digital satellite imagery including ESRI Worl Imagery, Google Satellite Imagery, Sentinel-2 (September 2016), and NT Visualiser Aerial Photography Mosaid http://www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/metadata/export_data?type=html&metadata_id=2DBCB771210A06B6E040CD9B0F274EFE
Pietch, B,A. et al, 1995, Groote Eylandt Region, Northern Territory - 1:250,000 scale geological Geological Special Northern Territory Geological Survey GEMIS: Groote Eylandt Region, Northern Territory

Pietsch, BA; Rawlings, DJ; Haines, PW; Page, M Groote Eylandt Region, Northern Territory: explanatory notes (1997) Radiometrics https://geoscience.nt.gov.au/gemis/ntgsjspui/handle/1/81900
Preliminary map unit boundaries derived using digital satellite imagery, DEM, geological, radiometric and topographic data.
Field data described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture. Final map unit boundaries adjusted to account for field data.
Core landform, soil and vegetation attributes attached to map units with additional attributes unique to individual surveys.

Positional Accuracy:Map unit boundaries delineated on screen using geographical information system software. The NT Visualiser Aerial Photography Mosaic
has roughly 7.2m accuracy. (Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing Vol. 72, No. 3, March 2006, pp. 249 - 260).
Esri World Imagery provides one meter or better satellite and aerial imagery in many parts of the world and lower resolution satellite imagery worldwide. The positional accuracy in Groote Eylandt is likely at the lower end of this.
The positional accuracy of geological and radiometrics varies across the area and is available in their reports.

Attribute Accuracy:The attribute information conforms to the Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook at time of capture. Attributes are assigned according to the dominant feature. The department's list of core attribute values, described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.
Each land unit has also been assessed for GENERAL LAND CAPABILITY, evaluating landscape characteristics that could influence the general use of the land. A General Land Capability Class of 1: Land with negligible constraints, to Class 4: Land with Extreme Constraints, has been assigned to each land unit. Descriptions for key characteristics considered important have been added to the land unit polygon, including acid sulfate soil risk, flooding, microrelief, salinity, slope, sodicity, soil depth, soil drainage, surface rock and wind erosion.
More detailed information about General Land Capability is available in the accompanying report. (See Supplementary Information in this metadata record for report PDF download details)

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Completeness:COMPLETE
