Description

Abstract:

This dataset contains spatial polygons identifying sandsheet heath vegetation within the Darwin Region.
The polygons are compiled from 2 spatial datasets, Liddle et el 2013 and Hempel 2003. The data sourced from Liddle is located within the Howard Sand Plains Site of Conservation Significance (SOCS) area. The data sourced from Hemple is outside this SOCS area and within the broader Darwin Region.

Sandsheet heath vegetation typically occurs on seasonally saturated or inundated, low-fertility, acidic sandy to silty hydrosols and is characterised by the dominance of mid-tall heathshrubs, shrubs and/or low trees in the upper stratum (typically Banksia dentata, Grevillea pteridifolia, Lophostemon lactifluus, Melaleuca nervosa, Melaleuca viridiflora, and Verticordia spp.) and a ground stratum with a diverse range of sedges, herbs and grasses but typically dominated by the restiad, Dapsilanthus spathaceus.

Although this vegetation community is strictly not heath according to the national vegetation classification system growth form definitions (NVIS, 2017), it has been a colloquially used term in the NT since the greater Darwin region land cover mapping (Hempel, 2003). The definition of Sandsheet heath vegetation has been referred to in the Land Clearing Guidelines (DENR, 2019), and therefore is retained here.

Data Quality

Lineage:Sandsheet heath vegetation communities were selected from both datasets and combined using ESRI arcgis software applications.
This dataset is described as Version 1, applicable as 21 August 2019.

Positional Accuracy:Liddle et al 2013: original dataset based on ground surveys and aerial photographic interpretation at approximately 1:10 000 scale.
Hempel 2003: original dataset was compiled at a scale of 1:100 000 using satellite derived imagery date, April 2001.
The datasets have not been updated since publication. There may be a high degree of inaccuracy when comparing this data to the present day extent of this vegetation type.

Attribute Accuracy:The data attributes have been reworked to simply note the presence of Heath or Other Vegetation communities. Please refer to the original datasets for further vegetation community descriptions.
The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied for storage in an ESRI file geo-database format.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.
